Day 13: The Humble Birth
“Rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
— Philippians 2:7 (NIV)
The birth of Jesus Christ is the epitome of humility. Unlike earthly kings who arrived in splendor and grandeur, our Savior entered the world in the humblest of circumstances. Born in a manger, surrounded by animals, and laid in a simple stable, Jesus chose a path of humility from the very beginning. This humble birth was not just an event of historical significance but a profound statement about the nature of God's kingdom.
Jesus' humility serves as a powerful example for us as believers. In a world that often values power, status, and self-promotion, embracing humility can seem countercultural. However, Jesus demonstrated that true greatness lies in serving others and putting their needs before our own. His life and teachings consistently emphasized the importance of humility, encouraging us to follow His example in our daily lives.
Theological Insight
Humility is defined as the quality of being humble and putting others first. It involves recognizing our own limitations and valuing others above ourselves. According to Millard Erickson in his work on Christian Doctrine, humility is not about self-deprecation but about having an accurate self-assessment and valuing others. Lewis Sperry Chafer also emphasizes that humility is essential for spiritual growth and effective service within the church and community.
Practical Application
Practicing humility in our daily interactions can transform our relationships and communities. Here are a few ways to cultivate humility:
- Listen Actively: Take the time to listen to others without interrupting or immediately sharing your own opinions. This shows respect and values their input.
- Serve Others: Look for opportunities to help those around you, whether through acts of kindness, volunteering, or simply offering a helping hand.
- Acknowledge Others' Contributions: Give credit where it’s due and celebrate the achievements of others without feeling threatened by their success.
- Seek Feedback: Be open to constructive criticism and willing to make changes based on others' perspectives.
By serving others selflessly, we embody the humility that Jesus demonstrated, fostering a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect in our communities.
Encouragement
True greatness comes through humility, following Jesus’ example. When we humble ourselves, we open our hearts to God's guidance and allow His love to flow through us. Embracing humility not only aligns us with Christ’s character but also enhances our relationships and strengthens our witness to the world. Remember, in God's kingdom, the last will be first, and the greatest among us will be those who serve others with a humble heart.
