Day 21: The Word Made Flesh

“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14 (NIV)

On this twenty-first day of our Advent Series, we delve into the profound mystery of The Word Made Flesh. John 1:14 beautifully encapsulates this truth: Jesus Christ, the eternal Word of God, took on human flesh and lived among us. This incredible act of God becoming human bridges the infinite gap between the Creator and His creation, making Him accessible and relatable to each one of us.

The incarnation, where God became man, underscores the depth of His love and commitment to humanity. It means that Jesus understands our struggles, our pains, and our joys firsthand. He is not a distant deity but a Savior who walked the same earth, experienced the same emotions, and faced the same temptations as we do. This accessibility allows us to connect with God on a personal level, knowing that He truly understands our human experience.

Theological Insight

Word Made Flesh refers to the doctrine of the Incarnation, which emphasizes that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man. According to theologians like Millard Erickson and Lewis Sperry Chafer, this union of divine and human natures in Jesus is central to the Christian faith. It signifies that God did not remain detached from human suffering and sin but chose to enter into our world to offer redemption and reconciliation.

By becoming flesh, Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God. He embodies God's character, His love, and His plan for salvation. This revelation is not just a theological concept but a tangible reality that impacts our daily lives, providing us with a Savior who is both divine and relatable.

Practical Application

Understanding Jesus as the Word made flesh invites us to live out the truths found in His teachings. It calls us to embody His grace and truth in our interactions with others. Here are a few ways to apply this understanding in your daily life:

  • Live Out His Teachings: Strive to follow Jesus' example of love, compassion, and integrity. Let His words guide your actions, whether in your workplace, home, or community.
  • Transform Your Life: Recognize that knowing Jesus as the living Word can transform your perspective and behavior. Allow His truth to shape your decisions and relationships.
  • Share His Message: Just as Jesus made Himself known to us, we are called to share His message of hope and redemption with those around us. Be a vessel of His grace in your interactions.

By embracing these applications, we not only honor Jesus' incarnation but also allow His transformative power to work within us, leading to a life that reflects His glory.

Encouragement

In today's world, where many feel disconnected and alone, the message of Jesus as the Word made flesh is more relevant than ever. His presence among us assures us that we are never alone in our struggles. Jesus' life and teachings provide a blueprint for living a life of purpose, love, and truth. Embracing this truth brings hope and direction, reminding us that God's love is tangible and ever-present.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the incredible gift of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. Thank You for making Yourself accessible and relatable through Him. Help us to embrace the truths found in His teachings and to live out His example in our daily lives. Transform us through Your grace and truth, and empower us to share Your love with others. As we continue this Advent journey, may we grow closer to You and reflect the glory of Your Son in all that we do. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
