Jesus Appears to Thomas
John 20:26-29
"A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you!' Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.' Thomas said to him, 'My Lord and my God!' Then Jesus told him, 'Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.'"
In this passage, Jesus appears to Thomas, addressing his doubts and inviting him to believe. This encounter highlights the importance of faith and the blessing that comes with believing without seeing. Jesus' interaction with Thomas reassures us that He understands our struggles with doubt and meets us where we are.
Understanding the Encounter
Addressing Doubt
Thomas, often referred to as "Doubting Thomas," struggled with believing in the resurrection without physical evidence. Jesus' appearance to him is a compassionate response to his doubt. By inviting Thomas to touch His wounds, Jesus provides the evidence Thomas needs, transforming his doubt into a powerful declaration of faith.
Significance of Faith and Belief
Blessed Assurance
Jesus' words to Thomas, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed," emphasize the value of faith. This blessing extends to all believers who trust in Jesus without having seen Him physically. Our faith is rooted in the testimony of the Scriptures and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit, providing us with blessed assurance.
"Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." — Hebrews 11:1
