The One True God
Isaiah 44:6-8
"This is what the Lord says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come— yes, let them foretell what will come. Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one."
In these verses, God declares His unique identity as the One True God, the first and the last. He challenges any other to match His sovereignty, power, and knowledge of the past and future. This proclamation is a powerful reminder of God's unmatched greatness and His position as the sole source of truth, strength, and salvation. The passage calls us to trust fully in God, knowing that there is no other like Him.
The Sovereignty of God
God’s declaration that He is the first and the last highlights His sovereignty over all things. He is the beginning and the end, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. There is nothing that exists outside of His control or knowledge. This truth provides us with a firm foundation for our faith, knowing that the God we serve is sovereign over all creation and all time.
The Unmatched Power of God
God’s challenge to any other being to declare the past and foretell the future underscores His unmatched power and wisdom. No one else can do what God does—He alone knows the end from the beginning, and His plans are unchangeable. This calls us to trust in His power and to rest in the assurance that He is in control, even when we do not understand what is happening in our lives.
"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." — Revelation 22:13
Trusting in the One True God
The passage concludes with a comforting command: "Do not tremble, do not be afraid." Because God is the One True God, we have no reason to fear. He is our Rock, our unshakable foundation. In a world full of uncertainty and false idols, we can rest in the knowledge that our God is the only true God, and He will never fail us. Our trust in Him is well-placed, and our faith in Him is secure.
A Prayer for Trust in God's Sovereignty
Lord, we acknowledge that You alone are the One True God. Help us to trust in Your sovereignty and power, knowing that You are the first and the last, and that there is no other like You. We pray for each person reading this, for their families, and for the challenges they may be facing. May they find peace in Your unchanging nature and strength in Your eternal power. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
