The Prayer of Jesus
John 17:1-2
"After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: 'Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.'"
In this passage, Jesus begins His high priestly prayer, addressing the Father and asking for glorification so that He may glorify the Father. This prayer, often referred to as the high priestly prayer, encompasses themes of unity, sanctification, and the mission of Jesus. It is a profound glimpse into Jesus' heart and His desires for His followers.
Understanding Jesus' Prayer
Unity and Sanctification
Jesus prays for the unity and sanctification of His followers. He desires that they be one, just as He and the Father are one. This unity is rooted in the truth and love of God. Jesus also prays for their sanctification, asking the Father to set them apart and make them holy through His truth.
Significance of Jesus' Prayer
Eternal Life and Glorification
Jesus' prayer highlights the gift of eternal life and the purpose of glorification. Eternal life is knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom He has sent. Glorification involves honoring God through our lives, reflecting His character, and fulfilling His mission. This prayer underscores the relationship between the Father and the Son and the invitation for believers to participate in this divine relationship.
"Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." — John 17:17
