Walking Humbly with God

"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

— Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Introduction

In a world often characterized by self-interest and competition, the prophet Micah delivers a timeless message that cuts to the core of what it means to live a life pleasing to God. Written during a tumultuous period in Israel’s history, Micah confronts both the religious leaders and the people, urging them to return to genuine faithfulness and righteousness.

Definition of the Biblical Theme: Walking Humbly with God

Walking Humbly with God encompasses living in a manner that acknowledges our dependence on Him, prioritizes His will above our own, and reflects His character in our daily interactions. It involves a continual attitude of humility, obedience, and reverence, ensuring that our lives honor God in all aspects.

Exposition

Micah 6:8 succinctly summarizes God’s expectations for His people. Let’s break down each component:

  • Act Justly:
    • Biblical Definition: Justice in the Bible refers to righteousness in actions and decisions, ensuring fairness, defending the oppressed, and maintaining integrity in all dealings.
    • Explanation: Justice goes beyond legal fairness; it encompasses righteousness in all our actions. It calls us to uphold what is right, defend the oppressed, and ensure that our dealings with others are marked by integrity.
  • Love Mercy:
    • Biblical Definition: Mercy is compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm.
    • Explanation: Mercy is about showing compassion and forgiveness, reflecting God’s own nature. It challenges us to extend grace, even when it’s not deserved, fostering a community rooted in love rather than judgment.
  • Walk Humbly with Your God:
    • Biblical Definition: Humility involves having a modest view of one’s own importance, recognizing our dependence on God, and valuing others above ourselves.
    • Explanation: Humility is recognizing our dependence on God and valuing others above ourselves. It’s about aligning our will with God’s and living in obedience, not for our own glory, but to honor Him.

Historical Context

Historically, Israel struggled with superficial religiosity—performing rituals without embodying the heart of God’s commands. Micah redirects their focus from mere external compliance to a heartfelt commitment to justice, mercy, and humility.

Application

How can we embody Micah’s call in our daily lives?

  • Act Justly: Look for opportunities to advocate for fairness in your workplace, community, or family. This might mean standing up against injustices, supporting equitable practices, or ensuring that your actions reflect honesty and integrity.
  • Love Mercy: Practice forgiveness in your relationships. When wronged, choose to respond with kindness rather than retaliation. Engage in acts of kindness without expecting anything in return, mirroring God’s unconditional love.
  • Walk Humbly with God: Cultivate a lifestyle of humility by acknowledging your limitations and relying on God’s strength. Seek His guidance in decision-making and prioritize His will over personal ambitions. This could involve regular prayer, studying Scripture, and serving others selflessly.

By integrating these principles, we not only honor God but also create a positive impact on those around us, fostering a community that reflects God’s kingdom values.

Additional Scriptures to Consider

  • James 4:6 (NIV):

"But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'"

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV):

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

  • Matthew 5:5 (NIV):

"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth."

  • 1 Peter 5:5-6 (NIV):

"In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.' Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time."

  • Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV):

"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."

Closing Thoughts

Micah 6:8 serves as a powerful reminder that true faithfulness is demonstrated through our actions, attitudes, and relationship with God. By committing to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, we align ourselves with God’s purpose and become beacons of His love and righteousness in the world.

Thought-Provoking Questions

  1. Justice in Action: What are some specific ways you can advocate for justice in your immediate environment this week?
  2. Embracing Mercy: Can you recall a situation where showing mercy made a significant difference? How can you apply that experience to future relationships?
  3. Humility with God: In what areas of your life do you find it challenging to walk humbly with God, and what steps can you take to grow in humility?
