Finding Rest in the Lord: Understanding Jesus as the Lord of the Sabbath

Finding Rest in the Lord: Understanding Jesus as the Lord of the Sabbath
The Historical Context of the Sabbath
In Mark 2:23-28, we find Jesus and His disciples walking through the grainfields on the Sabbath. As the disciples began to pick some heads of grain, the Pharisees questioned Jesus about what they deemed unlawful on the Sabbath. This moment presents a profound teaching about the Sabbath, deeply rooted in Jewish tradition as a day of rest and worship, yet often burdened by legalistic interpretations.
Jesus: The True Sabbath Rest
Jesus responds to the Pharisees with a pivotal declaration, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath" (Mark 2:27-28, NIV). This statement invites us to understand the Sabbath not merely as a legal requirement but as a gift designed for our well-being, with Jesus Himself embodying the true rest and freedom it signifies.
Living in the Sabbath Rest Today
Embracing the Sabbath rest in our lives goes beyond observing a specific day; it's about finding our rest in Jesus. He invites us to lay down our burdens, our striving, and find our peace and renewal in Him. This rest is spiritual, offering restoration for our souls and a reminder of the freedom Christ has won for us.
As we navigate the complexities of life, let us remember the call to enter God's rest, allowing our work and rest rhythms to be shaped by our relationship with Jesus. He is our Sabbath, offering rest not just one day a week, but every day, in every season of our lives.

    Description & Author

    Welcome to Pastor's Journal

Pastor’s Journal is a space for Scripture-anchored pastoral reflection from the life and ministry of Springfield Baptist Church. These entries flow out of the study of God’s Word, the work of shepherding, and the shared journey of following Christ together as a church family.

This journal is shaped by five steady commitments: reflecting carefully on Scripture, offering pastoral exhortation, helping bridge the space between Sundays, walking with God’s people through the seasons of life, and encouraging thoughtful meditation on God’s Word. Each entry is written with the aim of connecting biblical truth to daily faith, helping believers think clearly, live faithfully, and grow steadily in Christ.

Pastor’s Journal is not intended to replace preaching or formal teaching, but to serve as a pastoral voice alongside it—offering insight, encouragement, and biblical clarity as we seek to honor Christ in ordinary life. Whether addressing a passage of Scripture, a spiritual burden, or a moment in the life of the church, these reflections are offered in dependence on God’s Word and confidence in His faithfulness.

My prayer is that this journal would serve as a quiet companion in your walk with Christ, pointing you again and again to the sufficiency of Scripture, the hope of the Gospel, and the steady work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
